      Abstract

A discussion of the general and oral aspects of Reiter's syndrome has not appeared in the dental literature. Therefore, the literature has been surveyed with respect to terminology, etiology, systemic manifestations, including urethritis, arthritis, conjunctivitis, skin (especally penile) lesions, and oral manifestations, and the incidence of oral lesions, pathology, and differential diagnosis has been reviewed.
A typical case of Reiter's syndrome in a 27-year-old man is reported. Besides urethritis, conjunctivitis, and arthritis, the patient also exhibited penile and oral lesions with almost the same morphologic characteristics. The lesions on the buccal mucosa and gingiva were erythematous and surrounded by a whitish gray, elevated border. The histologic features of the buccal lesion included parakeratosis and intense leukocytic infiltration of the epithelium.
