Hemihypertrophies of the face and mandible

      Abstract

It must be emphasized that hemihypertrophy of the face and jaws may or may not involve all of the individual tissues of a single side of the face. Unilateral enlargement of all the tissues of the face and jaws is extremely rare and is known as the true hemifacial hypertrophy. Hemihypertrophy may, however, affect only the mandible, as the foregoing case reports have shown. It should be pointed out at this time that enlargement of the bony mandible makes the evaluation of the possible soft-tissue involvement extremely difficult. It can be seen that the presence, as well as the relative degree, of enlargement is difficult to determine, since most authors agree that the involvement of an individual tissue may be so slight as to be clinically insignificant. Treatment of a condition with such a wide variation of involvement must, of necessity, vary radically.
