Dr Stephen R. Matteson, a native of New Jersey, attended Rutgers University from 1955-1958
and obtained his DDS degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1962. After his
service as a general dentistry officer in the United States Air Force at Pope Air
Force Base in North Carolina (1962-1964), he practiced general dentistry in New Jersey
until 1973. At that time he returned to academics and obtained advanced education
in oral and maxillofacial radiology at the University of Connecticut Health Center.
Then, in 1975, he was appointed director of Radiology at the University of North Carolina
School of Dentistry, where he served on the faculty until 1988. During the summer
of 1988, Dr Matteson relocated to San Antonio, Tex, where he became professor and
chairman of the Department of Dental Diagnostic Science at the University of Texas
Health Science Center Dental School. He served in that position until March 2000 and
is currently a professor in the department.
